"Battle of Lepanto" is a song commissioned by one of our fans, Eryn Huntington and several of her friends. We hope you enjoy it:) Happy Feast of the Holy Rosary! Song Description: We wrote this piece in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary under her titles of: Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, Our Lady of Victory, and Our Lady of Guadalupe. The Battle of Lepanto was Oct 7, 1571. The piece begins with string tones inspired from a charting of Our Lady of Guadalupe's Tilma. Next follows a motif from a hymn "O Queen of the Holy Rosary" sounded by a clarinet. (The piece ends with this same motif). Next begins the Gregorian chant "Ave Maria". This is paused to begin the historic content of the piece. We used lyrics from G.K. Chesterton's "Lepanto" as the body of the pieces to drive the story forward. We made the refrain from various prayers or sayings. "Confugimus, Sancta Dei Genitrix, and Sub Tuum Praesidium" are all phrases within a very ancient prayer to the Blessed Virgin that begins "Sub Tuum Praesidium". The words "Signum Magnum" appear in the book of the Apocalypse (Revelation) 12:1 - "And a great sign appeared in heaven" and is used as the introit from the Mass of the Assumption (Aug. 15). The words "in hoc signum vinces" are taken from a vision that Constantine had before taking Rome: "In this sign you shall conquer". While in his case, the sign was the cross, we wanted to demonstrate that in this battle, and in our lives, it is by the sign of Our Lady that we shall conquer...specifically the Rosary. The entire translation of the Latin refrain is as follows: Confugimus - We fly unto thee Sancta Dei Genitrix - Holy Mother of God Signum Magnum - A great sign In hoc signum vinces - by this sign, you shall conquer Confugimus Sub tuum praesidium - Under thy protection Guadalupe - (A title of Our Lady taken from a word that means "one who will crush the serpent's head) In hoc signum vinces In the verse "Galleys clash..." we wanted to show that we are still fighting for our souls through our prayers to Our Lady. "Fingers worn now draw forth their beads" - We specifically thought of the prayers of the religious, whose fingers are worn not so much from toil so to speak, but from rigorous prayer. We composed and arranged the piece. My family sang it. Please no bad language in the comments. We want this to be family friendly:) Thank you! Lyrics: Battle of Lepanto Ave Maria Gratia plena All men Dominus tecum Benedicta tu in mulieribus They have dared the white republics up the capes of Italy, They have dashed the Adriatic round the Lion of the Sea, And the Pope has cast his arms abroad for agony and loss, And called the kings of Christendom for swords about the Cross, Chorus CONFUGIMUS SANCTA DEI GENITRIX SIGNUM MAGNUM IN HOC SIGNUM VINCES CONFUGIMUS SUB TUUM PRAESIDIUM GUADALUPE IN HOC SIGNUM VINCES The Pope was in his chapel before day or battle broke, (Don John of Austria is hidden in the smoke.) He sees as in a mirror on the monstrous twilight sea The crescent of his cruel ships whose name is mystery; St. Michael’s on his mountain in the sea-roads of the north (And now Don John of Austria is girt and going forth.) He shakes his lance of iron and he claps his wings of stone; The noise is gone through Normandy; the noise is gone alone; Chorus Et benedictus fructus ventris tui Jesus Sancta Maria Mater Dei Ora pro nobis peccatoribus Nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen. Where, risen from a doubtful seat and half attainted stall, The last knight of Europe taketh weapons from the wall, The last and lingering troubadour to whom the bird has sung, That once went singing southward when all the world was young, In that enormous silence, tiny and unafraid, Comes up along a winding road the noise of the Crusade. Strong gongs groaning as the guns boom far, Now Don John of Austria is going to the war, Chorus BRIDGE: Galleys clash, a battle of creeds, Fingers worn now draw forth their beads Many Aves pierce the sky Victory shall come from on High Chorus
