In chronological order. FAQ: Q: Your explanations are crap, and the sequence has more flaws than I can count. I won't believe any of this! A: Then don't. Add to this timeline, change it, make it your own. We are not the arbiters of Mario canon. Q: Does this timeline include EVERY Mario game? A: No. Q: Why didn't you include Smash Bros? A: With Smash's huge cast of characters, it would be nigh impossible to reconcile with the rest of this timeline (without making it completely incoherent). Q: Why didn't you include Mario is Missing or Mario's Time Machine? A: Because Nintendo had nothing to do with those. Q: Why didn't you include [insert game title here]? A: Frankly, probably because it was too obscure. If we didn't at least have some personal experience with a game, and the game itself wasn't particularly well-known, we usually opted not to include it. Q: Why isn't Captain Toad on the timeline? A: A small oversight. It would go directly before 3D World. Q: Is Super Mario Bros. 2 the Japanese or American version? A: Japanese (the Lost Levels) Q: How can Wario not appear until Super Mario Land 2, if he's a character in the spinoffs? A: While Super Mario Land 2 was the first point when we focused on Wario in the video, it's not his debut. In fact, the manual to SML2 mentions that he and Mario had known each other for some time before the game. Q: How can Donkey Kong Country fit after Donkey Kong 3 if Cranky Kong is the original Donkey Kong? A: We never said how long DKC takes place after Donkey Kong 3. It could be many years later, which would perfectly fit the original DK becoming Cranky. Q: Super Mario RPG can't be before Super Mario World! Yoshi appears in RPG, but he introduces himself for the first time in World. A: Yoshi being a species rather than an individual makes this point slippery. Theoretically, the Yoshis as a whole were aware of Mario since the beginning of the timeline, due to the Yoshi's Island games. Any introductions to Mario would be on an individual Yoshi basis. Q: In F.L.U.D.D.'s scan at the beginning of Super Mario Sunshine, you can see footage of Super Mario 64. Doesn't that mean 64 must come before Sunshine? A: Not necessarily. If the Star Festival is the source of the Power Stars in the Mushroom Kingdom (as evidenced by the intro to Galaxy 1), 64 must take place AFTER the Galaxy games. However, Sunshine had to be placed BEFORE the Galaxy games, as that game was Bowser Jr's debut. Q: Bowser is still an enemy at that point, so why is Mario Kart DS placed where it is? A: We chose this sequence to account for the development of the Poltergust, from the 3000 to the 5000. It's possible that Bowser simply didn't participate in that one Kart tournament. However, it's equally possible that Luigi used an older model of the Poltergust for the Mario Kart DS races. If it makes you feel better, group DS with the rest of the Mario Karts instead of our placement. It has no impact on the rest of the timeline. Q: The Paper Mario part doesn't make any sense! A: Yeah, that section's admittedly a small stretch. However, it's difficult to rationalize any other point where the series could fit. Some of the Paper Mario games begin with the opening of a book, and we felt it was logical that this book could in fact be Rosalina's storybook. Q: Where is the USA version of Super Mario Bros. 2? A: It would take place parallel to the Super Mario Land series, when Mario is no longer in the Mushroom Kingdom. It wouldn't be out of character for Bowser to fall back into his old ways once Mario is out of the picture.
