How to make the barrel pipe slide smoothly inside the receiver pipe is one of the least transparent aspects in every video I've seen about slam-fire shotguns. Let us consider the 12 gauge I made. I used 3/4" and 1" schedule 40 pipe. Off-the-shelf 3/4" pipe WILL NOT fit inside 1" pipe. The inside of my 1" pipe had a small rib down the entire length of the inside of the pipe. It will really help if you focus your efforts at reducing that rib. Reaming the pipe to with a drill bit would be very quick. But paying $15 for the drill bit seemed to defeat my "budget-build" goal. A round hand file like I did was time consuming and took A LOT of effort! I have subsequently discovered that wrapping a worn out strip of sand paper from my belt sander around a drill bit works well. By adjusting how many turns of sand paper are layered on any long cylindrical object (12" drill bit or threaded rod will work) I could chuck into my hand drill I could adjust the sanding drum diameter. Now, I literally just sand down the rib and smooth the 1" receiver bore at the same time. You'll also have to reduce the rib in the 3/4" barrel pipe so the shell doesn't split and to ease shell extraction. At some point you have to decide if you are going to make the sliding 3/4" gun barrel pipe fit inside the 1" receiver pipe by removing more receiver pipe wall thickness, or start to reduce the barrel pipe wall thickness. My early choice was to reduce the barrel pipe outside wall thickness with a flat hand file to get the final fit because the round file inside the receiver pipe was REALLY DIFFICULT. The flat file on the outside of the barrel was also imprecise and labor intensive but better than filing the inside of a pipe. On subsequent guns I have used a belt sander to reduce the barrel external diameter. Some would also caution that reducing the 3/4" barrel pipe wall thickness lowers the burst strength. I agree, but I'll never shoot magnum shells in this slam-fire. A 2-3/4" low velocity birdshot shell generates an impulse pressure of about 8,000 psi. Schedule 40 3/4" black pipe is rated at about 9,000 psi impulse pressure. I, personally, am very comfortable with that reserve. Additionally the 1" receiver pipe offers another 9,000 psi protection if the barrel fails. And, a slam-fire is not a closed system, there is a lot of gap between the receiver and the barrel for explosive gas pressure to escape other than out of the barrel. I would actually feel safer shooting my slam-fire with a barrel obstruction than a conventional industrially manufactured 12 gauge. (The classic 12 gauge barrel obstruction explosion is a 20 gauge shell is introduced into the barrel beyond the 12 gauge chamber. Another 12 gauge shell is then chambered and fired. The thin-walled barrel beyond the thick-walled chamber fails explosively.
