It was made by Raven Software and was published by Activision. It came out in 1998. The game uses the Id Tech 2 engine which was used in Quake 2. Ah yes, Heretic II. When I saw it on the shelf in some store I didn't even know what it was it just looked somehow interesting so I decided to buy it blind. To my surprise it actually was a good game, although some people, mostly fans of the old Heretic 1 were disappointed by it. Funny thing is I didn't really like Heretic 1 so that kinda evens it out :P While Heretic 1 was played as a typical Doom clone shooter, Heretic II tried to follow the ways of Tomb Raider, and it did pretty good too because Corvus (the Hero) has quite a lot of maneuvers and it is totally easy to use them because if Raven did something right it was the easy to handle controls. The only thing that needs some familiarization is the fact that everything seems to be a bit...delayed. You press fire, and he fires half a second later. You press jump and he jumps half a second later. It's not like the controls need a second to react it's more like "The animation has to start before he does anything", something like that. You will notice it when you play but it's not that much of a burden. As Heretic is set in a fantasy realm you are not using any typical weapons. You have 2 types of Mana (Green Mana and Blue Mana) All offensive magic powers you will find use the green mana. That means firebolts, lighting, annihilation. Basically all the things you can shoot at enemys Defensive powers use the blue mana. These spells are mostly there to protect you in one way or another but can also be used to damage enemies (like the lightning shield for example) You can also find weapons that use their own ammo. For example magic bows use magic arrows, and the hellstaff uses hellorbs and so on. Most of the time you will probably use your combat staff because you have it from the beginning, it needs no magic and can be used at any time (except underwater).It is also your only melee weapon and if used in the right way does a lot of damage and it can also be upgraded 2 times in the game. The second "weapon" you will have from the beginning is the firefist or firebolt. That thing is not very strong but it can always be used even if your offensive magic is depleted, but then it has even less power. The most important magic you can use is the your "Tome of Power". If activated it will power up all you offensive magic spells and weapons for a short amount of time. They will not only do more damage now but you will also see that they have a different effect.For example: The hellstaff normally shoots red orbs that fly relatively slow to where you aim at. But with the tome of power it will shoot some kind of magic beams that will instantly hit the target. In most of the levels you explore there are so called Sidhe Shrine's scattered around. They can give you powerups, superhealth or 2 types of Armor (silver and gold). They can also be found in multiplayer maps and are basically the Heretic equivalent of Unreal Tournament/Quake 3 powerups. The cool thing about Heretic II is that you can actually play the complete story campaign in coop mode with a few friends and if I remember correctly the skill level increases as more players join the server so it will get harder with more players not easier, well to a certain point atleast ;)

Corvus' journey seems to be over and he can finally return home although after all that chaos much has to be rebuild.
