Prue Stevenson, “Expend - MCA” - Acrylic on Canvas, 160 x 600 cm, Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA),Nonprofits & Activism,,Prue Stevenson, “Expend - MCA” - Acrylic on Canvas, 160 x 600 cm, Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Australia, ©2018 The artwork was performed by Prue on the 14th of September 2018 as part of ESWD2018 Forum (in conjunction with the Sydney Opera House) at the MCA Rooftop Cafe Sculpture Terrace Artist Statement: "Taekwondo has been an integral part of my need to “expend” energy, a form of stimming associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This dedicated approach has resulted in the achievement of my 3rd Dan Black Belt. Influenced by South Korean minimalist Artist Lee Ufan and his work “From Line (No. 780103)”, I thought about his Korean background and how I practice a Korean sport in Taekwondo. I also thought about the connection between muscle memory and stimming, and the relationships with why I practice Taekwondo. How it helps me maintain my energies at a level that reduces my feelings of anxiety, which can cause meltdowns during my normal week. How I use repetitive, mundane activities to stimulate myself in a positive way to help manage these energy levels, associated with the over sensory symptoms of autism. “Expend” challenges myself to strike the chosen medium using a Taekwondo axe kick, requiring tremendous focus, with my foot recording a print during every kick, a symbol of what has been expelled from my body. Similarly styled works have now been developed and played out on my RMIT studio walls in 2014, on RMIT’s First Site gallery walls in 2015 for my “Neuroambiguous” Exhibition, the “Expend” Exhibition in conjunction with OTARC and the Latrobe Art Institute (LAI) Bendigo on the wall of the Latrobe University Library’s Writer’s Block Café in 2017, which was performed as a dynamic work that was filmed during the making, and now at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Australia (in conjunction with the Sydney Opera House)."
