Distressed elephant,People & Blogs,Matusadona National Park (Protected Site),Zimbabwe (Country),Conservation (Organization Sector),Africa (Continent),Wildlife Management (Field Of Study),Elephant (Character Species),This distressed young elephant was seen on the Matusadona Shoreline. It was suspected that this injury was the result of a snare or gunshot wound. MAPP obtained permission from the Zimbabwean Parks and Wildlife Authority to immobilize the animal and attend to its injuries. This was achieved with the help of members of KAWFT (Kariba Animal Wefare Trust), BAPU (Bumi Hills Anti-poaching Unit), ALERT and CHANGA SAFARI CAMP. We were relieved to discover that his injuries were not as a result of any malicious actions, in fact he may have been the subject of a crocodile attack. This video demonstrates the incredible family bond that exists within elephants. Initially the elephants were loosely spread along the shoreline and there was no way of telling if they were all a family unit. This soon became apparent when the elephant was darted and incredibly the herd detected changes to the young elephants demeanor even before clinical signs became apparent to the observers, such is their intelligence. The mother was resolute, to the extent they she to had to be darted to afford us the opportunity to attend to her calf. One can only imagine the distress and grief that an elephant herd suffers when one of their family is shot by poachers. Both elephants retired to the bush. We hope to be able to report on his progress in due course. MAPP would like to thank all those who assisted and especially Mannie Kloppers who compiled this very emotional video for us.
