Air support, Transport, Reconnaissance in force, Combat SAR missions Mil Mi-2 URN Hoplite Soviet multipurpose helicopter History The first soviet helicopter was Mil Mi-1. Which was equipped by Ivchenko’s AI-26 piston engine and carried three passengers or to 533 kg. In the late 1950s Mikhail Mil came to the idea of using a turboshaft engine for helicopter power plant. May 30,1960 he starts the development of a new helicopter today known as the Mil Mi-2. Design and development There were used Isotov’s GTD-350 engines. By characteristics single GTD-350 yielded to foreign analogues. But the twin GTD-350 engines was almost half lighter and more powerful than the Mi-1 's piston engine. In the result the payload was more than doubled. Moreover, use of two engines improve the reliability and safety of the Mi-2 flight. Several Mi-1 's units were used, and the external dimensions remained similar. However the fuselage of Mi-2 was extensively altered from it’s predecessor. Production The Mil’s prototype first flew on September 22, 1961. The project was transferred to Poland to the WSK "PZL-Swidnik" factory in 1964. The first polish built example flew on November 4,1965. Designed as civil helicopter the Mi-2 interested the military soon. PZL-Swidnik produced a total of 5,497 the Mi-2 helicopters. About a third of them were specialized military modifications. Description The Mil Mi-2 URN is a lightly armored modification of the Mi-2 helicopter armed with unguided missiles (polish. Uzbrojony w Rakiety Niekierowane). Developed on a base of Mi-2 US in November 1972. Were produced eight units and other 18 were modernized from the Mi-2 US.
